During change, leaders should focus on stability and communication, helping employees navigate uncertainty with confidence and purpose.
I am not a pilot, but I have led folks from point A to point B in some trying times. Over the last 25 years, I've been part of organizations experiencing rapid growth, turnarounds, acquisitions, market shifts, and more than a few moments where the future felt uncertain...turbulent if you will.
One thing has become increasingly clear; during periods of change, employees aren't looking for perfection from their leaders...they're looking for stability.
They want someone who communicates honestly, even when all the answers aren't available or even more when they aren't pleasant. Someone who remains consistent when circumstances aren't. Someone who listens before reacting and projects confidence without pretending uncertainty doesn't exist.
I've learned that calm is one of the most underrated leadership traits.
It doesn't mean ignoring difficult realities. It means helping people focus on what they can control while keeping sight of where the organization is headed.
The best leaders I've worked with didn't remove uncertainty. They reduced the fear around it.
They did it by communicating frequently, reinforcing purpose, recognizing progress, and showing up every day in a way that gave people confidence. They came to win not wait.
As organizations continue navigating constant change, I believe leadership is becoming less about having all the answers and more about creating an environment where people feel confident enough to solve problems together.
People rarely remember every decision a leader made. However, they always remember how that leader made them feel.
